Normoyle Engineering was proud to deliver the centrepiece of UTS's iconic Dr Chau Chak Wing Building- the Oval Room, designed by Frank Gehry. At its heart sits the world’s largest timber/concrete composite stair—a sweeping structure featuring 12-metre-long glu-laminated timber beams, set within one of Australia’s most complex architectural interiors.

To construct the building-within-a-building, Normoyle designed and fabricated a custom overhead crane system and engineered bespoke solutions to account for cumulative timber shrinkage, acoustic isolation, and structural interface challenges. Our scope also included the complete internal fit-out, showcasing exceptional timber and joinery craftsmanship throughout the space.

We also delivered and installed the largest insulated glass unit (IGU) window in the Southern Hemisphere, providing acoustic performance without compromising design intent. This project stands as a landmark example of innovative thinking, collaboration, and delivery excellence—combining architecture and engineering at their best.
