About Normoyle Engineering

Our story began over 130 years ago in the small town of Young, New South Wales, where Dave Normoyle — a skilled blacksmith and coach builder — laid the foundation for what would become a family legacy of craftsmanship, resilience, and innovation.

Today, Normoyle Engineering is one of Sydney’s leading engineering companies, trusted by some of the biggest names in the industry. But while the scale of our projects has grown, the heart of our business remains the same: a commitment to honest work, strong relationships, and solutions that last.

Our Full story

Our Story: A Legacy of Innovation and Craftsmanship

In 1986, David Normoyle—great-grandson of the original founder—re-established the family’s legacy by formally registering F & D Normoyle Engineering Pty Ltd. The inspiration came unexpectedly: David, newly married to Forooz, discovered a brass plaquere moved from an old wagon, engraved with the name F & D NORMOYLE YOUNG. That artifact, steeped in family history, reignited David’s connection to the family’s early engineering roots and led to the rebirth of the business under its historic name.
From humble beginnings in a Bondi Junction garage with just a 4-inch grinder and a 240Vstick welder, Normoyle Engineering has grown into one of Sydney’s most respected engineering firms. The company now boasts a portfolio of landmark projects, partnering with industry leaders including Lendlease, John Holland, Thiess, and Laing O’Rourke.

The Origins: F & D Normoyle, Young NSW (1890)

The Normoyle story begins in 1890, when Dave “Old Dave” Normoyle, an Irish blacksmithand coach builder from Adare, County Limerick, founded the original F & D Normoyle Engineering in Young, New South Wales. Accompanied by his wife and children, Old Dave quickly earned a reputation for craftsmanship and entrepreneurial flair. A charismatic book maker known for shouting “from the bush, from the bush!” at Sydney race meetings, he eventually retired to Kensington near Randwick Racecourse. Back in Young, his sons Frank and Dave continued the family trade, while brother Jim pursued fashion, becoming a prominent milliner in Sydney. Frank later joined Jim, running a factory in Brisbane employing over 300 people. Dave (Junior) introduced electric welding and gas cutting to the region, married Methodist Marcella Penson in a discreet Catholic ceremony, and raised two children—John (Jack) and Marie. Despite their religious differences, the couple eventually united in faith, with Marcella playing organ at Mass into her 90s.Dave was an inventive showman—famously holding live electric wires as a street performance—and deeply committed to his community and family. His son Jack would latercarry the torch, modernising the business and steering it through changing times.

Expansion and Innovation

After Dave’s early passing at age 47, Jack Normoyle, then just 19, took the helm. Under hisleadership, F & D Normoyle expanded to a five-acre facility and pivoted to large-scale farm infrastructure, including prefabricated grain silos and storage sheds—many of which still stand today. The company won major contracts from the Grain Elevator Board, NSW Rice Board, and contributed to the infrastructure boom in Canberra.

A New Chapter

Following Jack’s sudden passing in 1970, his sons—including David Normoyle, then only13—spent time learning the trade. David and John apprenticed as boilermakers while Jimworked in sales. Over time, the company shifted structure, eventually becoming National Engineering after a management buyout in 1984 involving Westpac’s venture capital arm.But the Normoyle legacy wasn’t over.In 1986, with a reverence for his heritage and a passion for craftsmanship, David Normoyle founded a new chapter of the family legacy—reviving the historic name and building fromthe ground up. Today, Normoyle Engineering is renowned for taking on the most technically demanding, architecturally significant projects in Australia, blending a 130-year family tradition with modern engineering excellence.
