The Darling Exchange is one of Sydney’s most distinctive buildings—and Normoyle Engineering played a pivotal role in bringing its signature curved timber facade to life. With over 20km of custom-designed timber elements forming a continuous spiral around the structure, this project demanded extraordinary precision, planning, and craftsmanship.
To meet the architectural complexity and strict tolerances, Normoyle built a dedicated off-site facility complete with four overhead cranes to manufacture pre-modularised façade sections that mirrored the building’s unique form. We also developed a novel slab forming system to maintain the accuracy of the parabolic concrete slabs—crucial to ensuring perfect alignment during installation.
Delivered in close partnership with Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKA) and Lendlease, the project exemplifies what’s possible through collaboration, innovation, and relentless attention to detail. The result is a global architectural icon, and a testament to Normoyle’s ability to engineer and execute at the highest level.
